National Garden Show: History, OrganizationHistoryThe first horticultural shows emerged in the age of colonialism. Exotic plants from foreign countries added their mystical stimulus to European enthusiast's gardens, if they could afford them, of course. Private collectors arranged the first horticultural shows proudly presenting their treasures, usually in their own gardens. As commercial breeding of ornamental plants evolved, breeders and traders organised flower shows as well. In Germany, larger scale public horticultural shows became common since the late 19th century. After World War II, regional garden shows were held in Landau (Süwega 1949) and Stuttgart (Deutsche Gartenschau 1950). The first Bundesgartenschau (BUGA) took place in Hannover in 1951. The Bundesgartenschau is Germany's largest exhibition of horticulture and landscape architecture. Organization of the BundesgartenschauThe Bundesgartenschau (BUGA) takes place every two years, whereat every ten years it will be hosted as Internationale Gartenbauausstellung (IGA). Mostly, the organizer will be a company founded for this sole purpose. Partners will be the hosting city and Deutsche Bundesgartenschau GmbH (DBG), the latter being a joint venture of Zentralverband Gartenbau e.V. (ZVG), Bundesverband Garten-, Landschafts- und Sportplatzbau (BGL), and Bund deutscher Baumschulen (BdB). The patronage for the BUGA is taken by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany.
