National Garden Show 2011 Koblenz Architecture Contest

The town of Koblenz has launched an open, two-stage architectural competition in order to evaluate the design of the 2011 federal garden show's core areas.

Adding Value to Cultural, Recreational and Touristic Facilities

The competition focuses on three core areas

  • Electoral Palace's Garden
  • Blumenhof (courtyard of flowers), Deutsches Eck
  • Ehrenbreitstein Fortress
Entrants will be asked to integrate these significant historical places with demands of today's lively Koblenz town, surpassing a mere preservation of monuments towards a more future-oriented concept, improving both visitors' and citizens' quality of life, adding sustainable value to Koblenz' townscape.

Koblenz, the 2000 year old town at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers, represents an important part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Middle Rhine Valley, from Rüdesheim and Bingen to Koblenz, with its castles, historic towns and vineyards, has been inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List since 2002. Therefore, entrants should also consider their planning a significant contribution to the development of the World Heritage Middle Rhine Valley.
